Found this interesting article in Eco RI News titled “Solar-Powered Indoor Farm Sustains Fall River” about an indoor solar powered hydroponic farm inside the Durfee Union Mills. According to the article the farm, S&S’s Urban Acres, has been able to provide vegetables to local retailers as well as providing healthy produce to those who wish to participate in the CSA program. It is worth checking out the gallery on their website where there are some interesting photos of an array of fruits and vegetables growing in January.
The article interestingly points out that the venture is not a profitable operation at this point and may not be in the near future. Maybe not profitable but, surely an interesting concept, one that could help transition old mills into more viable, productive facilitites.
