Birchwood Design Group was on the team led by LLB Architects to design a new Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Gay, Transgender, Queer Center for the University of Rhode Island. The new facility references the vernacular architecture of Kingston Village and will be a distinctive and unique presence once it is complete. Once finished, the center will provide a nurturing and engaging environment to students, faculty and staff.

BDG was tasked with providing an accessible facility which allows for seamless transitions between the indoor and outdoor spaces. We re-purposed the existing stone building foundation in the new landscape and utilized a native planting palette referencing the New England landscape in which the building is sited. The landscaped areas provide interest and also serve to infiltrate roof run-off, becoming a functional component of the overall storm-water management strategy. New stone walls delineate pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular circulation, while providing a distinctive entry progression to the facility.
