World War I Memorial Competition
Birchwood Design Group participated in an international design competition, sponsored by the World War I Centennial Commission, to design the Nation’s World War I Memorial in Washington, DC. The site is situated in Pershing Park, located on Pennsylvania Avenue, with view sheds to both the White House & the Capital. The memorial’s aim was to honor the four million Americans that fought in the war during the 18 months the United States was involved. Over 350 entries were submitted. Using light, water, passage & temporal design strategies, Birchwood’s design spoke to the number of lives given to the war, as well as the relation to the placement of the memorial relative to the White House & the Capital.
